Discover how Navim reimagines the Telegraph Engine Room: from a historic naval communication tool to a modern symbol that bridges heritage, design and digital technology. In our latest communications and events campaigns, we have chosen to talk about us and celebrate our cultural and historical heritage—the tangible and intangible traces of our history—through an innovative, holistic marketing strategy.
A narrative from the physical to the digital and vice versa, through the use of an iconic naval instrument: an engine room telegraph, reinterpreted in a modern key and customized with the distinctive Navim Group style.
The Telegraph Engine Room > history and functioning
For decades, the engine room telegraph was the primary communication system between the bridge and the engine room, used to transmit operational orders clearly and directly.
It consists of a vertical column with a lever, a control panel divided into circular sectors, and an indicator.
Each angular sector of the lever and indicator corresponds to a specific engine command:
- STOP (engines stopped)
- READY (engines ready to move)
- FINISHED (engine finished)
- SLOW (slow forward/reverse)
- HALF (half-power forward/reverse)
- FULL (full power forward/reverse)
Each command provides a different power output from the propulsion system.
The engine telegraph is located both on the bridge and in the engine room; its position indicates the current propulsion status. When the lever is moved from the bridge by order of the officer of the watch, the indicator in the engine room also moves, signaling the request for a different speed. Moving the lever in the engine room to the position corresponding to that indicated on the bridge confirms the order received. Today the engine room telegraph is more compact and digital and it represents only one of the possible ways in which, through automation, it is possible to control the pace of a ship.
Navim’s reinterpretation of the iconic Telegraph Engine Room
Navim choice of the engine room is clearly linked to its iconic nature; it represents our tribute to the sector in which we operate, our vocation for travel, exchange, and transformation. It is a dynamic symbol, capable of navigating the gap between memory and contemporaneity, becoming a vehicle of knowledge and attraction.
Our project began with the creation of an iconographic representation replacing the traditional angular sectors with our various product lines, prioritizing the image of the brain, a metaphor for creativity and design clearly representing Navim design excellence. We subsequently transformed it into a digital app and then we decidedto create a modern, physical version with the aim of integrating the physical functionality with the digital application.
Finally, we completed the project with a final touch of magic and imagination, creating a fully branded Navim physical engine room telegraph that, through the mechanical movement of the levers, launches the corresponding digital contributions.
The result is the Navim Group Engine Room Telegraph, which not only highlights our eclecticism and uniqueness in the naval sector, but also builds a bridge between past and future, between tradition and innovation, through an engaging narrative that celebrates our expertise and manufacturing excellence.
Through advanced digital technologies, multi-channel storytelling, and moments of real interaction, we have transformed cultural enjoyment into an engaging and lasting experience, reviving an object from the past and projecting it into the future.
